ARPA Outdoor Recreation Work Group @ This is a virtual event
This work group will begin to explore outdoor recreation opportunities and collaboration to address the decline of people engaged in outdoor recreation activities and how we can retain and engage participants across the state through City Recreation and Parks programming.
The latest report on fishing participation in the US from the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation came out and has good news! It’s great to see fishing participation on the rise.  It’s up to us as Recreation planners to provide excellent fishing experiences in Arkansas and to do what we can to retain this interest in an outdoor recreation activity.

This report covers participation during the calendar year 2020.  This report covers participation by region, fishing type, gender, ethnicity, and a number of other factors.  There is not statewide data in this report, but we know that we saw similar increases in fishing participation here in Arkansas.
Here are a couple of key points from the report:
  • Overall participation increased with nearly 55 million Americans Fishing in 2020, the highest amount in the last 14 years.
  • 19.7 Million females went fishing in 2020, a 10% increase over 2019.
  • Youth and adolescent fishing increased by 53% with a total of 13.5 million participants, the highest participation numbers since before 2007.
  • African American participation experienced an increase of 14.6% over 2019.
There is a large volume of additional information that can be found in the report:
